The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was taken to hospital with a broken hand on November 10, the same night Mr McEvoy attacked him.

Police initially arrested the 16-year-old because it emerged the 16-year-old’s ‘friend’ had also attacked him with a blade in March this year.

In his sentencing memorandum, Judge Sir Michael Harvey, QC, explained the circumstances behind the attack.

He said: ‘It appears that Jarrad McEvoy was at the house with a knife when he was given a drink. The knife was left hanging from the bed while the other party was sleeping.’

The judge added: ‘The other party woke up and he realised what had happened. I am satisfied that he would be prepared to act in the same way if he was in prison.’

It was later discovered that Mr McEvoy was in possession of a knife at the time of the assault on the fellow prisoner.

When questioned about the knife at the hospital, Mr McEvoy said: ‘I had stolen it from one of the other prisoners but he told me he had no idea when he saw me taking it that I was going to kill my fellow prisoner.’

Following the attack, another prisoner at the facility told the same story to police.
